Who is behind Escape James?

This is Maxim. Mischievous eyes, a wry smile. It’s hard to guess his background!
First an electromechanical engineer: a man of reason, with an analytical, Cartesian mind… He’s also a great lover of harmony and fun: a pianist and theater actor in his spare time. In his quest for meaning and his contribution to the world, the turning point came with the death of his mother.
He then decided to completely change careers and embrace the unknown (…it’s a metaphor). He thus embarked on a great adventure and became an actor.

A lifelong film and theatre enthusiast, he quickly realized that what truly motivated him were the human connections he made during his experiences. Gradually, he defined his life’s mission: to bring creativity to others in order to create extraordinary moments for them.

Being a fervent fan of board games and escape rooms, the idea of ​​combining his strengths as an engineer and an artist in the design of escape games eventually came about quite naturally.

Today, his ambition is to truly create a bridge between the corporate and artistic worlds (that cliché about bridges for engineers!). Because they both have a lot to offer each other…Thus, with rigor and humor (one does not preclude the other – comedy is serious business!), he shares his fantasy in a universe of deep reconnection, outside the frame and outside of time, where creativity and emotions become levers of cohesion and transformation.

Other partners also join the adventure depending on client needs and the agency’s evolution: illustrators, videographers, animators, event organizers, HR experts, etc.

Any hints before you get started?

An escape game is an immersive investigation game in which a group of participants must solve a series of puzzles to achieve a goal, usually escaping (hence the word “escape”) from a fictional location within a limited time. Unlike a board game, here everything takes place in real life, in a real setting (an escape room or “escape game room”), with objects to manipulate, clues and keys to find, locks to open, and a lot of cooperation.

A murder mystery is a theatrical game centered on solving a fictional crime (often a murder, as the name suggests). Each participant becomes either an investigator or a suspect in a scripted, sometimes even costumed, plot where social interaction is key. At Escape James, we combine the best of both worlds: the physical immersion of an escape game with the narrative intensity of a murder mystery.

An Escape James investigation follows a fluid and immersive progression, designed to leave a lasting impression:

  • A theatrical briefing: a professional actor welcomes you and immediately immerses you in the world of the investigation. No flat briefing or endless rules: you’re already in the story.
  • For approximately 2 hours, your teams will have to observe, search, interact, interrogate, and above all, cooperate to solve the mystery. Between live-acted scenes, videos projected like a mini-series, clues and pieces of evidence to analyze, locks to unlock, and a few surprises and plot twists: you’ll experience a complete adventure halfway between an escape game, theatre, and cinema, in an atmosphere worthy of a police drama.
  • A triumphant finale with a collective debriefing to reveal the truth, share impressions and memories.

At Escape James, we love the idea of ​​a secret club. So we’ve crafted a turnkey immersive experience, ready to take place wherever YOU choose! Manor house, reception hall, offices, garden… every event is unique: there’s no fixed venue for the activity, it comes to you!

However, plan for a covered space (the weather being what it is in our region…).

Regarding the playing area, allow for approximately 50 m² + 3 m²/person (which means that for 20 participants, you will need to plan for 110 m²). This is so that groups can enjoy sufficient space for the activity. In addition, for the purposes of the gaming experience, it would be necessary to provide 2 or even 3 rooms separate from the “main” room.

Suggested location for the event: castles and abbeys provide an excellent setting for this activity 😉

In terms of geographical area: in Belgium until 2027. Then also in the north of France and Luxembourg (to be discussed depending on distance and availability).

Our concept is currently intended for:

Other exceptional events: Escape James also makes its services available for extraordinary occasions, where those involved ones wish to go big: reunion of alumni, retirement or important farewell party, significant anniversary (30, 40, 50 years…), launch of a brand or product, inauguration of a museum, promotional filming for event agency, etc.

It is indeed about living a timeless experience that is as immersive as it is realistic!

Our service is primarily aimed at young (and not-so-young) adults. No intellectual prerequisites or theater experience are required: your curiosity, teamwork, and detective skills will be more than enough. And rest assured, we’ve seen reserved participants transform into formidable investigators!

Even if I am not a puzzle enthusiast or an escape room expert? Our scenarios are designed to blend problem-solving, observation, intuition, and above all, to foster connections between players. Of course, fans of mysteries, puzzles, and theatrical experiences will certainly enjoy the activity more… But there’s room for everyone: strategists, chatterboxes, introverts, tech geeks, pranksters, and even those “who are just there to soak up the atmosphere.” We constantly listen to feedback and strive to adapt so that everyone has a great time. It’s almost a whole art of human psychology…

On the other hand, we will always try, as far as possible, to adapt the activity for people with reduced mobility.

Note: There is no upper age limit; the activity allows for a wide range of intergenerational participation. However, it is preferable to divide the groups into more homogeneous groups to ensure a rewarding experience for everyone and a fairer challenge. The average age used as a reference for designing the puzzles is 30.

In terms of the game’s language, two versions are available: French or English.

Our mystery games are currently designed for events with 12 to 50 participants, in groups of 3 to 5 people. However, adjustments for larger groups are possible (primarily by adding more actors). The activity itself lasts 2 hours (120 minutes). Allow approximately 30 additional minutes for the briefing and debriefing.

For team buildings, several complementary modules can be added to the activity, allowing for a richer event with more interaction and a longer duration (up to 4 hours).

Given the personalized nature of the experience and the inclusion of immersive theatre, for weddings we advise you to contact us at least 3 months in advance, especially during peak periods (spring, summer, end of year). For team building events, this timeframe can be reduced to a minimum of 6 weeks.

Because we wanted a name that said a lot, without saying too much.
“Escape James” is a clever linguistic twist. The sharpest minds will certainly have noticed it immediately: it’s a deliberate nod to escape games, obviously, with an added touch of its own identity. In reality, there are three other reasons behind this name…

Because we were aiming for a name that was easy to remember, smooth to pronounce, and that worked in all languages.

Then, let’s be honest… James sounds like… an English name! A name with hints of composure, elegance, and mystery. And British charm has that certain something, that quintessential je-ne-sais-quoi, somewhere between Baker Street, three-piece suits, and a soft accent. A world we at Escape James particularly love.

Finally, it’s also a reference to John H. Watson, also known as James Watson, the faithful sidekick of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Sherlock Holmes. Always there, never quite in the spotlight, but the private detective’s indispensable right-hand man! Some might also see a parallel with a well-known spy known as 007…

“Escape James” is therefore a concise, captivating, and slightly British invitation to enter a world that immediately sets the tone for the experience: investigate, escape, and fully immerse yourself in the game. A world where the plot unfolds in the cracks, where every name has its reasons…
